Bariatric Surgery

Weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, has been shown to provide effective and sustainable weight loss help to people who have been unsuccessful with other weight loss methods.

Although recognized as the most successful treatment option for obesity, bariatric surgery is only one part of a successful weight loss journey.  We prefer to think of surgery as a tool by which we offer weight loss help to people who have the attitude, commitment, and desire to achieve a healthier life through weight loss.

The surgeons at Hollywood Bariatrics perform the following weight loss surgeries:

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band or LAP-BAND® System

The LAP-BAND System is an inflatable belt that is surgically placed around the upper portion of the stomach.  The band restricts solid food from passing through it and aids weight loss by slowing digestion and reducing the amount of food eaten before feeling full.  Adjustable gastric banding is the least invasive of the bariatric surgeries and, because it does not require cutting or stapling the stomach or intestines, it is fully reversible.

Minimally Invasive Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

During gastric bypass, the stomach is reduced in size and much of the absorptive area of the small intestine is bypassed so that food from the small stomach empties lower down the small intestine.

The smaller stomach and the shorter length of intestine for absorbing calories is what aids weight loss.

Minimally Invasive Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy is a relatively new procedure for weight loss that is particularly well suited to patients who have high surgical risk because of extreme obesity or associated medical conditions.

The procedure involves removing 60% of the stomach, leaving behind a “banana shaped” sleeve of stomach. This portion of stomach restricts the amount of food that a patient can eat and leads to significant weight loss (up to 30-40% of excess weight).

Minimally Invasive Banded Gastric Plication

Banded gastric plication is a procedure that combines gastric banding with a technique known as stomach plication. A band is placed to create a small stomach pouch at the top of the stomach, while the remaining curvature of the stomach is folded into itself to reduce stomach capacity and hunger.
