Exercise after Weight Loss Surgery

Exercise is important to anyone that wants to be healthy and energetic. It is especially important to someone who has had weight surgery, like banded gastric plication.

With banded gastric plication, a band is placed at the top of the stomach to restrict the amount of food going into the stomach. Patients that live in Ft. Lauderdale that have had weight surgery need to understand the importance of exercise in order to maintain the weight loss that they achieved after having bariatric surgery.

One reason to exercise prior to your operation is that it shortens recovery time and lessens the risk of complication from the surgery. Recovering from surgery is stressful and exercise will help reduce that stress and make you feel better emotionally, as well.

Another reason is that you will lose more weight if you exercise, and you will keep the weight off easier. In one study, patients who exercised after surgery lost about 13 more pounds that those who didn’t exercise.

When weight is lost from the body, some of that weight will be muscle mass. After surgery, your intake of calories will drop radically and your body will try to compensate by burning muscle mass. Muscles are important to your metabolism as they help your metabolic rate increase. By exercising and making your body mass leaner, you will lose weight in a healthy way and keep it off.

For the first month after surgery, you will probably only be able to walk for exercise. After that, you will need to get into a routine of 30 minutes of exercise five days a week. It is important to find physical activities that you enjoy, since you need to have an active lifestyle to stay fit and happy.
