Exercise Speeds Weight Loss After Surgery

After undergoing bariatric treatment with a Ft. Lauderdale weight loss surgeon, many patients are anxious to lose excess weight as quickly as possible. According to a recent study, patients who have undergone bariatric obesity surgery can accelerate their weight loss with exercise. In the past, it was not known whether working out provided any additional weight loss benefit for patients who had undergone gastric bypass surgery. In this study, researchers evaluated 199 patients who underwent a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure. They noted that the procedure itself yielded tremendous weight loss effects, but they also observed that the patients who were more active after surgery lost significantly more weight compared to those who remained relatively sedentary.

The results of this study provide powerful evidence that a lifestyle change is very important following bariatric surgery. According to this study, patients who make an effort to exercise for at least 200 minutes every week will lose an average of 15 pounds more than those who remain less active. Many of the patients in the study achieved this added weight loss by walking, which is considered a very safe and practical way to increase activity after gastric bypass surgery.
