Weight Loss may help everyday aches and pains

Do you find that you have pain or soreness in one part of your body, but you’re not sure what you did to cause the injury? Is your back always sore? Do you have an odd pain in your wrist or other joints? These aches and pains may occur over time, even if you don’t recall a specific injury, because of common activities that you do over and over again.

Your job, posture, lifestyle, or daily habits may cause you to perform the same simple movements repeatedly. For instance, perhaps you spend hours sitting in an office chair moving a computer mouse back and forth. Maybe you pick up a baby and place him or her on your left hip several times each day. You may simply be getting up from a chair the exact same way every time. This repetition over an extended period of time can cause you to overwork some muscles while under-working others. The muscles that are worked harder will tighten and the muscles worked less frequently can lengthen and become weak. This imbalance of muscle strength puts extra strain on your ligaments and joints and can cause you to move unnaturally in order to compensate for these changes. Arthritis, bulging disks and tiny fractures can all develop as a result of these imbalances in your body caused by repetitive movements.

Taking pain medications may help temporarily alleviate your aches and pains, but you’ll need to correct the imbalance and strengthen your joints in order to find permanent relief.

Increasing activity as part of your new lifestyle after bariatric surgery helps by bringing balance back to your muscles. This may involve specific exercises to build up the muscles you use infrequently and stretching regularly so you  bring your body back into balance and alleviate common pains.
